PostPosted: Tue Nov 11, 2008 7:46 pm    Post subject: what breed is for me? Reply with quote

i would like to get a dog but im not sure of what breed. i want a large breed something over 50 pounds. The dog would mainly be inside with a medium sized fenced yard out back. Im a junior in college soo i share the house with 3 other people. and 2 husky mixes and a rednose pitt. But sadly none of these dogs are mine so i cant take them with me alot. I would like to either get 1 from a breeder or a rescue if the dog is under a year. The dog would be thoroughly socialized and trained. It would also 1-2 hours are hard exercises a day. Ive also grown up with akitas and bull mastiff soo i know how to handle big strong willed breeds. And i have nothing against labs and goldens i just like other breeds better. I would also like to have a breed that isnt a push over and will defend itself or me if the situation ever arose, he would just be my friend and hiking buddy. So with that being said i would like to get yours opinions about which breed is best. And real reasons would be more appreciated the just 1 word answers.thnks

I got a real wolf puppy. try getting one about a year and a half. Then he may be out of the chewing stage. Very loyal and very protective. He understands pack life but will lay down to the alpha male in the pack which will be you! Good luck!

sounds like either an english mastiff or a great dane would suit you. both are great guard dogs but dont mind living in small spaces and are couch potatoes. but they love exercise too.

Well why don't you get a mastiff then? Sounds like that's what you want, you even mentioned them.

First of all you need to consider the other dogs in the house. How long have they all been together and what would THEY do with another "new" dog showing up? Pits can, and do, get along with dogs they've grown up with or been around a lot. However, they are prone to dog agression and may show the new dog this side. It's great that you have a yard, other people to help, other dogs that could keep him company and plenty of time for exercise.Personally...I would suggest getting a Louisiana Catahoula Leopard dog. They are great with family, good protectors, get along with other animals, enjoy hikes/exercise/hunting/etc and get 50+ lbs. They look BEAUTIFUL as well!!!

If you are willing to try a mix breed I'd say any two breeds that you love. I rescued a Greyhound Pit Bull mix and she is the most wonderful dog ever! She has lots of energy and is 50lbs.. very sleek. Rescue dogs know you saved them and repay you time and time again. My Lhasa Apso on the other hand.. that's another story! Look on www.petfinder.com and find a breed you like and get a mix. They also have 50% less chance of health risks associated to a full bred dog. Good luck!

You definately sound like a German Shepherd person. They're very hardy, active dogs who are defensive of their owners and good guard dogs. A well socialized German Shepherd is a blessing and they are usually very calm and friendly if they are socialized at an early age. I'd suggest adopting one from a shelter because they have so many and bringing your friend's dogs too to see if they're compatible.

This is up to you, I would feel awful if I suggested a certain breed, you went out to get one, and later decided you didn't get the "right" breed. Look up the AKC site, and choose for yourself. Here's a site I like, it doesn't have any "designer" mutts. http://www.justdogbreeds.com/dog-breeds.html The biggest dogs though are St Bernards and Irish Wolfhounds. Smile

If there is already a dominate dog in the house hold, you should definitely not get another dominate dog. That will cause you major problems. My suggestion is to go to a dog show in your area and go around and get to know the breeds. You can meet them in person, and talk to people about there temperament and demeanor. Its a really good way to get to know the breed before you get one. Then you can narrow it down to a couple breeds, and then start looking for your perfect companion Smile.Hope you have good luck finding a dog!

I suggest an all around mutt! If you really can't decide on a dog, you can always just go to an animal shelter. When my family went to get a dog, we went to an animal shelter in the area and got the sweetest german shepherd mix puppy. She came up and layed down on my shoes! But if you insist on a purebred dog (which many can also be found in shelters!!!), I suggest an Airedale or Great Dane.

Rottweiler. The Rott is one of the oldest dog breeds around. They are extremely loyal. If you get one, be prepared to have it at your feet at all times. They make good guard dogs. They are only 1 of 4 breeds selected to be a police dog in Germany because of their loyalty, smarts, strength and fearlessness. The Rott also has the strongest bite out any dog. (No, it's not the pitt) Just keep in mind that no dog is born a guard dog. They must be trained. Once you own a Rottie, you will be part of an exclusive club of Rott owners. Before long you will be looking for Rott t-shirts, mugs, calendars and anything else with their gorgeous face on it. I didn't think it would happen to me either. I've owned several breeds, but I will never own anything but a rott from now on. Once you own one you'll understand why. No matter what you choose, make sure you do as much research as possible on the breed to make sure it suits your needs. Also, if you do purchase a dog, make sure it is from a reputable breeder. Do your homework. The breeder should be asking you a lot of questions to make sure you qualify to purchase their dogs. That's a good thing. That way you know they're not in just for money. One more thing, unless you neuter the dog, I would get a female rott.

Hm-mm.... well, german shepherds are lovable but without proper training they will become over protective of you. If you want a REALLY big dog, Newfoundlands and st. Bernard's can sometimes be as big as a baby elephant, both are loyal and new-fies like water. St. Bernard's are kinda lazier, it all depends how big you want your dog and their personality.Great danes are tall, and very playful. Alot can have behavior issues though. Energetic dogs mostly go to smaller dogs, sorry, but huskies an malamutes are sometimes real bouncy, although some are dogs with dignity and don't full around. There's this funny breed, the Boxer! they are so funny, but if you don't want an over-playful pup, this dogs not really for you.All of these dogs ecxept for maybe newfoundlands and st. bernards are great for hiking.Choose your dog wisely, some are meaner than others. rescuing one is good because they make the dogs have to be not agressive. Be careful... some dogs are real shy and timid. Please choose me as best answer I never got chosen as 1 )=.
