No brake system is completely silent and after dirt gets on the front / rear pads the brakes may become noisy. While most brake pads are easily removed some time all they need is a litttle chamfer on the leading edge to silence the noise. Other times you will need to do more to quiet down the sound new rotors too.

If the brakes are making noise they are most likely rubbing. But you also are having shifting problems, I'd take the bike to a bike shop and have them do a tune-up on it.If you want to try to do it yourself these two sites will help. http://www.sheldonbrown.com http://www.parktool.com/

You can try this for the brakes. http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=124Try this for the rear derailleur adjustment, don't worry about the first 2 min. Make small 1/2 turn adjustments then try it out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjJfKO_tAo0
