i've started running, but in small increments with walking. I just don't want to ruin my knees. is it just a matter of how I run or the shoes I wear? thanks for your advice.

apparently there is some shoes that you can get which make it so your feet are padded when your running so your joints etc will get a softer landing each time you step in your run lolnever tryed them myself tho....

Shoes can make a huge difference in the jarring impact on your knees. Buy the most comfortable, best quality, you can afford. Stress to the salesperson you are looking for good impact absorption. If you think your knees are prone to injury, you may want to try elliptical trainers. Biking is also a great exercise that is actually good for you knees.

There are a few things you can do to try and prevent your knees from suffering any injuries. You should definitely get a good pair of running shoes. ASICS shoes are the best for running, they are made for shock absorption and they are top-of-the-line. Check out with your local shoe store which ones would be best for you.Another thing you can do is, try to run on soft ground, like grass, a treadmill is alright. Try and avoid cement and hard surfaces for running. If you experience pain in your knees you can use an ice pack to help heal the pain. Another thing you can do is get a glucosamine supplement, which will relieve joint pains. If the pain is severe, I suggest you take up another exercise.Best of luck!

Stretch your hamstrings before running!!!Its also great to stretch your quads and calves...thats if you are not already stretching everything before a run. Also if you keep your feet low to the ground (kinda shuffle) when running you will greatly reduce the impact to your shins, knees and lower back.If you have high arches on your feet, I recommend you see a physician to get prescription insoles. It is also recommended to replace your running shoes every 6 months.
