Hello i hope you guys can help me. I went through a period of severe major depression that lasted a year and gained a lot of weight. Prior to my depression I was a pretty good runner. I have three records at my college and used to be able to run 5k races in 17:20. I was nationally ranked and competed in nationals and considered 'elite'. I had to leave school and go on medical withdrawl to get better. Right now I am home and working on getting better as well as weight loss and getting back in shape. I havent run consistently in 5 months but i never stopped completely at times i would not run or work out for 2 weeks because all i wanted to do was sleep. I am feeling better and trying to get back into running but it is so hard because i feel so out of shape and everything hurts when i run. I am worried that I will never get back into the shape i once was in just last year.I hope to be back into it this spring with diligent running and at longest next fall. Is this possible because i want to compete again and be back to my self. Do you think I can lose all that weight and get back down to 100-108 range? some ppl gain weight and they never lose it all. Here are some stats. My pre-depression weight was 102 poundsI went up to 152 pounds.I am 5'3I am 20 years oldI am also scared that I may have lost my ability to run fast.

you can definitely lose it all. count your calories, using something like caloriecounter.com which helps you keep track of what you need to eat and how much you've eaten already per day. as for getting back in shape, you have to take it slow. you said it hurts when you run, and that's probably because you are trying to do too much too soon. try just running a mile or two a day until you can do that comfortably, then start building up to the mileage you used to be doing. good luck!
