| I just got a 20 hp mercury outboard that when idling it will only spit water out the telltale for a while then spray a full stream for a while then only spit for a while and then repeats the cycle.When in gear and running it sprays a full stream.Is this normal?Is this cooling controlled by a thermostat and that is how its supposed to act?Any info is appreciated. |

| Like any other boat it sucks water in, pushes it through a manifold around the cylinders and then exits.It sounds like its doing fine, just check to see if the engine is hot (like really hot will be an indicator that its too hot, but a fair amount of heat (maybe 110 degrees on the lower unit, is fine). If you're worried get a manual. If you're really worried take it to a boat mech. |
