I have heard that a good pair of walking shoes and walking an hour a day is all I need to get into great shape and lose weight. Is this true? I have heard people rave about the benefits of walking, but wonder if this is just a fad. How exactly is it good for us and what does it do exactly? Thanks in advance. Thanks, gals. I am glad it really does work. I needed the confidence boost. Most excellent answers. You guys are so encouraging. Reisa, you take the prize. I am most amazed and inspired by you! Wow, I will do just that. Thanks so much. Now, I have to deal with the scoliosis. Thanks again and God bless all...

The benefits of walking. Personal experience. I started walking 14 miles a day. Initially it took me 2 1/2 hours. After about a month I was walking 14 miles in 1 hour and 10 minutes. Comfortably. That was cross country. Now that I am older I own a treadmill. I walk in my privacy without intrusion and I have no fat on my body. I feel great. I jump rope for cardio. That takes a while to work up to. I feel good about the way I look and feel. That is what matters most. Good luck. Keep the faith.

if you start walking for like 30 minutes a day and stick with it EVERY day no matter what, even if its raining and you walk around the kitchen table, start this about 3 weeks to a month before you quit smoking and it will help you.

Fifteen years ago, I weighed over 340 pounds. Eventually, I got tired of being so fat and decided to do something about it, but quickly realized that all the diets out there wouldn't work for me, as at the time they were based heavily on lots of veggies and I am deathly allergic to almost all vegies.I tried a few popular fad diets, but seemed to only gain weight on them. The Atkins diet was a disaster for me - I ended up in the emergency room with ketosis thingie almost shutting down my kidneys. Eventually, I gave up.Then a huge snow storm came through, breaking the fence around my yard, and I didn't have the money to fix it. I could no longer just open the door to let the dogs out, I had to leash them up and let them out. They got so excited on the leash, there was no way to just go out, have them do their business, then go back in the house - they simply wouldn't put up with it. So I started walking around the block. Well, actually, they dragged me around the block :)Anyway, three months later, I was noticing we were walking more and more, and my favorite XXXXXXL sweatpants were all stretched out, so I went to the store to buy new ones... and had to get a pair four sizes smaller than I'd been wearing. Rushed home... and what do you know, I'd lost 30 pounds and never realized it. Just from walking the dogs.I was so encouraged that I started to make other changes that WORKED FOR ME. I completely stopped eating at fast food restaurants - something I did daily at the time. I cut out all red meat. I eventually cut way back on processed foods (cold cuts, TV dinners, etc) and increased my intake of pasta, rice, chicken, fish, eggs, cheese, pork, and soup. 18 months later, I was down 140 pounds, and looking at 199 pounds on the scale. Three years later, I was down to 155, where I still am now. I still walk the dogs every day, although the two dogs I had then have since died (one 14 and one 13 years of age... saddest days of my life), my current two dogs, one a Labrador/Collie mix and one a black Labrador, enjoy our daily walks and I love it when the vet says to me "How do you keep your labs so slim? Most labs I see are way overweight..." I eat fast food once a month now, and once every two or three months I have a hamburger, but otherwise I still eat about the same diet: Lots of fish, chicken, and pastas. Our bodies are designed for a lot of walking, after all, the car wasn't invented until what, 90 years ago? We weren't designed to drive around, we were designed to WALK everywhere. Our entire physical structure is built with easy of walking in mind, and every time you are walking, you are utilizing the machinery that is your body in the way it was ultimately designed to be used: walking. And OF COURSE, walking is great after quitting smoking! It may help you reduce or completely avoid the dreaded "quitters thirty!" (average 30 pounds gained after quitting smoking)
