Next year I am going to be a foreign exchange student to Ireland for one semster. I was wondering what the Irish education system is like. By the way, next year I will be a high school junior. In Ireland, I know basically know the system works, with the junior cycle, transition year, and the senior cycle that is geared towards the Leaving Certificate. Currently, I am taking all honors and AP Courses, have a 4.2 GPA and am ranked in the top 2% out of 1192 students in my class. Should I take the transition year or enroll in the 5th year? What kind of courses are generally offered in both?

hi im not to sure about your own school system or what 4.2gpa means?? however i am irish and finished school last year. My advice personaly is to go straight to fifth year and skip transition year. but that all depends on what you are looking for. Transition year is a relaxed year were you do more none course related work. for exapmle you can learn basic japenese or basic spanish and social history studies, however these are not subjects that you will sit any exam for in your leaving cert. you go on outing and weekends away and is what us irish call "a doss year". I myself did transition year and regreted it so much that i went back to fifth year in the november of that year. Fifth year is more study and learning focused on preparing you for your leaving cert. You can do many subjects eg. home economics, business studies, goegraphy, history,art-history, wood work, metal work etc etc... but you have to do the basics...Irish, english and maths, and most people do a language either french or german. The other non exam subjects(some which are compulsory) are religoin, s.p.h.e (which is social, polital and health education), p.e. and career guidance. hope thats a help:)
