| I have an exercise bike but I like to do both. I feel like forcing myself to jog on the injured ankle as I am so angry this has happened. I feel that replacing the jogging with extra cycling for a while won't be as effective at keeping my weight down. What can I do to stop this happening again? The inside of the ankle, over the bone has basically swollen up and hurts when I press it and when I hop even slightly on it. |

| NEVER force yourself to exercise if you have injured yourself. You could do more damage and end up with a permanent injury. Spend a week either walking (NO JOGGING OR RUNNING) and/or cycling. Try to elliptical if you can. While it may not be as effective as running, you need to listen to your body and readjust for the moment.I could tell you what the many doctors have told me, but instead I think you should see a doctor and get tests run to ensure that this doesn't happen again. Chances are your running technique is what caused it in the first place, so you may want to look at that with a trainer. |

| What's worse? Having a week or two off jogging, and maybe putting on a pound or two, which you'll shift in a week, or damaging it so badly that you can't run properly on it for ages? Ankles do take a good long while to heal. When you're able to relax, elevate the bad foot and apply an ice pack, bag of frozen peas, something like that. Physiotherapy will also help. You can try a support bandage or sports strap when it has healed a bit and the swelling has gone down. I totally understand the need to keep exercising, so if you absolutely can't bear to hold off, may i suggest using a cross trainer? They're brilliant fat burners, and you get a full body workout with a much lower impact on joints, etc than running. Better still, join a gym with a good reputation, and benefit from the advice and help from the fitness instructors.Hope you feel better soon! |
