I was on an elliptical machine about a week ago and checked my heart rate using the monitor on the machine. It was about 194. (I was feeling it, too - believe me.) Is it ever good for it to get that high? Everything I've seen on the web seems to advise keeping it under 190.I'm about 6'2", 180 lbs., mid-20s, if it makes any difference.

yo want to get it down you have to just do some conditioning and eat healthy, your heart rate got that low because it is weak right now and needs to pump that fast to oxidize your body, so do conditioning it will strengthen your heart and if you do a hard/ good conditioning workout you should even be able to see a difference the next day when you do the same exercise your heart rate should already have decreased by 5 beats or more

you should not reach more than 80% of your maxmmum of your heart rate (your maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age) ... so your heart rate was too high

I would be skeptical about the results given by the heart rate monitor on the machine. The best way is to just check your own pulse. You can use your radial artery (palm up, thumb side, slightly lower than your wrist) or your carotid artery (on the inside of your neck - please only check one side at a time!). You can get a good estimate by counting for 10 seconds and multiplying by 6 or 15 seconds and multiply by 4. This will give you your heart rate per minute and is more reliable than the machine. I agree with the other responses, it's best if you don't exceed your maximum HR (220-age).Addendum: to answer your question about when it would be bad to exceed 200 - anytime you start becoming symptomatic (really short of breath - unnaturally so, not just because you are working out, any chest pain, lightheadedness or dizziness).
